He comes up with the idea of the three girls forming a group and that's when Sister & the Sisters is born. After hearing Sister's powerful vocal chords at an open-mike night, wanna-be promoter Stix (Luke, Antwone Fisher) approaches her and offers to manage her career. She especially doesn't want them involved with the music industry, she's a failed singer herself and knows that it's a cruel and wicked business. She's made plenty of her own mistakes and doesn't want to see her daughters repeat them. The girls have a complicated relationship with their mother, a church lady who's determined to keep her girls on a straight and narrow life path. I actually like this version better than the original. The filmmakers retain the same basic story, but they make many adjustments to the narrative and it results in a comparatively fresh story about the importance of family. One of the major differences between the remake of Sparkle and the 1976 original is that the setting has been changed from 1950s Harlem to 1960s Detroit. Militant younger sister Dolores (Sumpter, Think Like a Man) rounds out the trio and together they make some beautiful music.
However, it's Carmen Ejogo (Away We Go) who steals the show as Sister, she delivers a heartbreaking performance as the materialistic older sister who puts her career as the group's lead singer in jeopardy after getting romantically involved with the wrong guy. In her first role, Sparks positively shines as Sparkle Anderson, the role originally played by Irene Cara. What is it that they say about art imitating life? In any event, she delivers a knockout performance as Emma, the mother of three young girls who find instant success as a Supremes-like singing trio. In the movie's most prescient line, she asks her daughters, "Was my life not enough of a cautionary tale to you?". She still sounds pretty good, but her voice doesn't have the same powerful impact that it did about 25 years ago and I think we all know why. The movie's centerpiece has the late singer belting out an imperfect rendition of "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" in front of an enthusiastic congregation at her Detroit church. The remake of Sparkle will likely be remembered for two reasons: 1) it's the acting debut of American Idol's Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks and 2) it's the final film performance of Whitney Houston.
